Calculation of metrics

Cyberweather

The calculation of cyber weather (cybertoxicity in cyT) is performed as follows:

cyT=1in+10out, with { in the number of toxic flows IN out the number of toxic flows OUTcyT = 1 * in + 10 * out \text{, with }\begin{cases} \text{ } in \text{ the number of toxic flows IN} \\ \text{ } out\text{ the number of toxic flows OUT}\end{cases}

The weighting of an OUT toxic flow is much more important because it represents a network device that initiates a communication to a toxic IP address.

There are 5 different levels of cyberweather:

Cybercarbon

The cyber carbon represents the equivalent in CO2 emissions (CO2e) of the volume of the network flows.

According to the ADEME (French Environment and Energy Management Agency) and a report posed in January 2022, the study shows that the environmental impact of data transmission on :

  • a fixed network (about 18 gCO2e / Go)

  • a mobile network (estimated at 50 gCO2e / Go)

In the case of Serenicity, the majority of the devices are installed on fixed networks. Therefore, the calculation is as follows:

cyC (in gCO2e) =18x109, with x the sum of the flows in bytescyC \text{ (in gCO2e) }= \frac{18 * x}{10^9} \text{, with } x \text{ the sum of the flows in bytes}

The notation gCO2e / kgCO2e means gram / kilogram CO2 equivalent.
